Right here in Concord, Steve Medlin saw numerous people struck down with polio. He well remembered the dread and panic caused by the polio epidemics of the 1950s. Steve said, “It is time for me to do something about it.”
In 1985, Steve Medlin joined Rotary International through the Concord Rotary Club because Rotary International’s main focus around the world was the eradication of polio. Steve went to work immediately raising money to beat down a horrible disease so he would never see another case of polio in his hometown of Concord.
Rotary International is a service organization of over 1.3 million members around the globe.
Steve joined Rotary in Concord to make a difference in international service with:
>>Eradicating polio. After 30 years of fund raising, over $1 billion dollars – (yes billion with a “B”), polio has been virtually eradicated over the entire world by the efforts of Rotary International.
>>Local efforts were important for Steve also, such as
>>Gathering food for the Salvation Army through an annual project called the Can-A-Thon
>>Constructed a playground in McGee Park, Concord, fully accessible by handicapped or wheel chair bound children.
>>Constructed a children’s water fountain playground at the corner of Union Street and Corban Avenue
>>Constructed a community farmer’s market shelter building at the corner of Union Street and Corban Avenue
>>Provided annual scholarships for nursing students at the local hospital for well over 30 years.
>>Provided Meals on Wheels service for shut in citizens twice a week
>>Continued active financial support for the Concord High School Bible Teaching Program which first began in 1942
Polio is almost gone.
Now, Rotary has set its sights on Alzheimer’s disease. Today there are over five million (5,000,000) adults over 65 with Alzheimer’s in the United States. The occurrence of the disease is growing rapidly. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America estimates over twenty percent (20%) of the population over 55 will have Alzheimer’s within 20 years, a total of nineteen million (19,000,000) people.
Rotary International is committed to beating this disease, too.
